Promoting Healthy and Supportive Indoor Soundscapes
One of the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic period is the importance of sound in our lives. Urban sounds (or the lack thereof) tell a story of an unprecedented change in our society, traffic reduction has brought the sounds of nature back into our urban centres, and the sounds of our unusually crowded homes made us to be comforted from our nearest and dearest's presence, while leading to challenges in carrying out new activities from home. Notwithstanding the potential impact in terms of conveying information, creating a sense of place, supporting activities, enhancing affective and mental states, “sound” has been traditionally considered as unwanted, and as such as “noise” to be avoided and reduced. However, this approach is not always successful in improving quality of life and acoustic comfort. This is not just a function of decibel noise level; it is a function of human response to the acoustic environment in context, created by a range of acoustic and non-acoustic factors. While the scientific evidence gathered so far on the impact of sound stimuli on humans has focused on the risks arising from noise exposure, more research is needed towards new approaches for the characterization, management, and design of indoor soundscapes that support restoration, health, and well-being, as well as basic research on (negative and positive) potential health-related, emotional, cognitive, and behavioural outcomes for people.

Simone Torresin is a Building Engineer, post-doctoral researcher at Eurac Research (Bolzano, Italy), currently Honorary Research Fellow at UCL IEDE. He was granted the title of PhD in Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Trento, in cooperation with Eurac Research, Institute for Renewable Energy, and with the Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, The Bartlett, University College London (UK). His research focuses on the characterization of the relationship between sound and building occupants, by developing and applying indoor soundscape methodologies.

Francesco Aletta is an architect and urban sound planner by training, research associate at University College London (UK). He has been active in soundscape studies for more than 10 years with an interest in methods for measuring soundscape perception by people and standardization processes, as well as how to translate soundscape descriptors in languages other than English.
Invited Speakers
Papatya Nur Dökmeci Yörükoğlu is an Associate Professor of Interior Architecture specialized in the field of acoustics and noise management. She earned her Ph.D. degree at Sheffield University, School of Architecture, focusing on establishing a novel framework of indoor soundscaping. She is currently the Chair of Interior Architecture Department and coordinates Building Physics and Environmental Control Laboratory at Cankaya University, Ankara, Turkey, where she also teaches 4th-year design studio and courses on indoor environmental quality, architectural acoustics, soundscape, and building services, for both undergraduate and graduate levels. She works on indoor environmental quality, acoustic comfort, auditory and spatial perception, semiotics, and education within the scope of soundscape research field with her graduate students. She is a member of the European Acoustics Association Technical Committee on Noise council.

Dr Hyun In Jo received his B.Sc. and PhD in the Department of Architectural Engineering (architectural environment system) from the Hanyang University in 2016 and 2022. He is currently a young scientist post-doc researcher in the Department of Building Energy Research at The Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology (KICT). He has been active as LEED AP (BD+C), LEED AP (ID+C), and WELL AP since 2016. His research interests include a holistic understanding of how people perceive sounds within the indoor and outdoor environments in the aspect of audio-visual interaction and provided perception models based on interdisciplinary approaches from acoustics, psychology, architecture, medical science, and urban planning. He was awarded prizes as a young professional researcher from the European Acoustics Association (EAA) and the International Institute of Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) in 2019 and 2020.
Arezoo Talebzadeh is a senior architect and a soundscape researcher completing her Ph.D. at Ghent University, Belgium. She is a sessional instructor at OCAD (Ontario College of Art and Design) University and working on LTC and Senior Housing projects in Toronto in her professional practice. Her design focuses on people’s perception of space and how architecture can promote health and well-being. Arezoo’s research focuses on sensory stimuli, especially sound when designing for people with cognitive difficulties and dementia. Her research examines how a designed soundscape can help people sense time and space and how acoustical agency fosters the quality of life in care facilities.
